Obituary of Erich Otto Freiter
FREITER: Suddenly at his residence, Blue Water Rest Home Apartments, Zurich, Tuesday, August 21, 2007, Erich Otto Freiter Sr., formerly of Dashwood and Leamington, age 82. Beloved husband of the late Katharina “Kaethe” (Janzen) Freiter (2004). Loved father and father-in-law of Kurt and friend Ursula of Florida, Reiny and Lynda of Exeter, Erika and Robert Sterzik of Calgary, Erich Jr. and Cheryl of Dashwood. Loving grandpa and “Opa” of Sonia Freiter and her husband Iwan Smolders, Heidi Freiter, Ryan Freiter and his friend Diane, Andrew Freiter and his friend Rhonda, Nathaniel Sterzik, Melanie Sterzik, Byron Freiter and Katelyn Freiter. Dear brother and brother-in-law of Paula Luettel of Germany, Heinz and Hildegard Freiter of Lindsay and Herta Freiter of Germany. Remembered by Kaethe’s family, and his many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brother Kurt Freiter (MIA WWII), parents Julius and Emelia (Phillips) Freiter. Resting at the T. Harry Hoffman & Sons Funeral Home, Dashwood, with visitation Friday 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at Zurich Mennonite Church, Saturday, August 25, 2007 at 1 p.m. Pastor Phil Wagler officiating assisted by the Rev. Henry Dueck. Interment Zurich Mennonite Cemetery. If desired, memorial donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Cancer Society or charity of choice would be appreciated. Erich served with the German Navy during WWII, coming to Canada in 1950, worked as a construction contractor in the Leamington area and was a founding member as well as the past-president of the Rhine Danube German Club. Moving to the Dashwood area in 1969 he continued his craftsmanship and farmed. In his retirement years he and Kaethe operated Edelweiss Wood Craft Shop and Kaethe’s Kaffee Haus in Dashwood and they were founding members of the Dashwood Friedsburg Days.
