I was very saddened to hear the news of Fred’s passing. So many good times to remember over the years.
I was fortunate enough to stay with him and my aunt during my university career. Many times he took me out for a beer after work and to share a few laughs. He also showed me the art of making homemade sauerkraut.
Growing up, my brothers spent considerable time at his trailer in Grand Bend. So many great memories at the beach. He often took us for a ride in his Mustang and we drove up and down the main drag.
He hosted an annual Christmas party with my aunt. We would all go to church beforehand and you could always count on him singing “Go tell it on the mountain”.
Thank-you for all the great memories. RIP Uncle Freddy.
Best,
Jeremy Schmidt

I was only a young kid when my dad raced with Freddie and his brother Dixie at Bridgeport Speedway. What I remember most is Freddie’s huge smile. I can see from the pictures posted here Freddie never lost that smile. Always a gentleman and I’m sure he will be missed. My condolences to his family.

Fred was a frequent friendly face in Grand Bend at the legion and cruising Main St in his red Mustang, hat & sunglasses playing the song Mustang Sally. He will be missed by many.

Rest in Peace Fred! I will miss your witty humor and a dance partner at Turnbull's dances or the Legion. You are a real gentleman, the heavens are brighter with your presence. Love Kathy S.

Fred Engel car #sweet 16. What days those must have been in Bridgeport. He raced with his brother Dixie who was the rough and tough win at all costs driver. Folks I have talked with considered Fred to be much more gentlemanly on the track. Not many of those racers left now. Fred always seemed to be enjoying himself. Going to miss u teasing me about my Chevys, godfather. RIP.

Fred loved those fords! Most fun he had last few years was driving the convertible in the Canada Day Cove parades. Top down and the car full of his friends. Fred also had plenty of truckin stories from his time on the road with Reliable Transport and Kitchener steel. Going to miss those stories guy

Fred loved his dogs. I think a bit of him slipped away when Beckie left him last year.

Memories of Fred at the beach and all his friends at Turnbulls Grove. The wing nites at Colonial and fridays meat draw at the Legion. He sure could dance and enjoyed his music right to the end. The last song we listened to was Merle Haggards, If we can make it thru December. A well timed song and a beautiful departure Uncle Fred. Gonna miss you
